한국계 미국인 뮤지컬 공연 작곡가-작사가, 극작가, 편곡자, 배우 

 

줄리아 류는 미국 세인트 루이스에서 태어난 한국계 미국인으로 뉴욕에서 뮤지컬 공연 작곡가이자 작사가, 극작가, 편곡자 및 배우로도 활동 중이다. 작곡가로서 전문 분야는 현대 뮤지컬 공연, 디즈니 영화를 주제로 한 뮤지컬, 대중 음악, 코메디 등이다. 줄리아 류는 사회적 평등을 위해 연대하는 음악가들(MUSE)의 제 1회 1대 1 멘토링 프로그램 (2021-2022)에 선정되어 뮤지컬 작곡가 지니 테서리로부터 멘토링을 받았고 MUSE 린다 트와인 장학금 (2021) 초대 수여자로 선정된 바 있다. 또한 초대 마에스트라 뮤직 멘토십 프로그램(2021)에 참여하여 데보라 윅스 라 퓨마 (Deborah Wicks La Puma)로부터 멘토링을 받았다. 줄리아 류의 작품은 하버드 대학교에 위치한 아메리칸 레퍼토리 극장, 파르카스 홀 및 아가시 시어터, AMAS 뮤지컬 시어터, 노스캐롤라이나 대학교 그린즈버러 연극대학, 센트럴 스퀘어 시어터에 위치한  노라 시어터 컴퍼니, 하버트 아트랩, 미주리 대학교, 그리고 웹스터 대학교 커뮤니티 음악 대학에서 공연된 바 있다.  

 

줄리아 류의 최근 작품으로는 (브로드웨이 연극 해밀턴, 케네디 센터에서 공연된 연극 인더 하이츠 출연) 배우인 제이 퀸튼 존슨과의 협업으로 제작된 오리지널 뮤지컬 이상한 나라의 앨리스가 있으며 뉴욕의 AMAS 뮤지컬 시어터에서 29시간 동안 진행된 무대 위 대본 리딩 워크샵 과정을 거쳐 올 여름 미국 캔자스 시티의 코테리 시어터에서 초연될 예정이다.  또 다른 작품으로는 청소년을 위한 연극 (TYA)으로 미국 레퍼토리 시어터를 위해 2020년 가족 뮤지컬로 제작된 “잭과 빈스토크: 뮤지컬 어드벤처(Jack and the Beanstalk: A Musical Adventure)”, 2019년 가족 뮤지컬 “엄지공주: 작은 뮤지컬(Thumbelina: A Little Musical)” 그리고 미국 국립예술기금(NEA)의 지원을 받아 센트럴 스퀘어의 노라 시어터 컴퍼니에서 제작 중인 “더 이스트사이드:어 뉴 뮤지컬(The East Side: A New Musical)”이 있다. 

 

하버드에서 줄리아 류는 아시아 출신 학생 예술가들의 활동을 위한 여러 자원 및 공동체를 제공하는 동아리인 하버드 대학 아시아 학생 예술 프로젝트(ASAP)를 공동 설립했으며 2020년 래드클리프 도리스 코헨 리바이 뮤지컬 시어터 상 수상자이자 및 존 하버드 장학금 수여자로 선정된 바 있다. 현재 2022년 루이스 서들러 예술상 (음악 작곡 부문) 수상 후보자이다. 

 

Korean-American Musical Theater Composer-Lyricist, Librettist, Orchestrator, and Actress 

 

Julia Riew is a Korean-American musical theater composer-lyricist, librettist, orchestrator, and actress from St. Louis and New York City. As a composer, she specializes in contemporary musical theater, Disney-inspired musical theater, pop, comedy, and more. Julia was the inaugural recipient of the Musicians United for Social Equity (MUSE) Linda Twine Scholarship (2021) as well as a member of the first MUSE One-on-One Mentorship Program (2021-22) in which she was paired with composer Jeanine Tesori. She was also a member of the inaugural Maestra Music Mentorship Program (2020-21) in which she was paired with Deborah Wicks La Puma. Her original work has been featured at the American Repertory Theater, Harvard University’s Farkas Hall and Agassiz Theater, AMAS Musical Theater, The UNC-Greensboro School of Theater, Nora Theater Company at Central Square Theater, The Harvard Art Lab, University of Missouri, and The Community Music School of Webster University.

 

Julia’s recent works include Alice’s Wonderland, an original musical a collaboration with J Quinton Johnson (Hamilton on Broadway, In the Heights at the Kennedy Center) that was workshopped in a 29-hour developmental reading in New York City at AMAS Musical Theater and will be premiering in Kansas City at the Coterie Theater this summer. Her other works include the TYA show Jack and the Beanstalk: A Musical Adventure was commissioned for the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.)’s 2020 Family Musical, Thumbelina: A Little Musical (The A.R.T. 2019 Family Musical), and The East Side: A New Musical, which is currently being developed under a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) at Nora Theater Company in Central Square.

 

At Harvard, Julia co-founded the Harvard College Asian Student Arts Project (ASAP), a club created to provide the resources and community for Asian student artists, and was the recipient of the 2020 Radcliffe Doris Cohen Levi Musical Theater Prize, as well as a John Harvard Scholar. She is currently a nominee for the 2022 Louis Sudler (Music Composition) Prize for the Arts.
