이리나 보코바는 불가리아 소피아 출생으로2009년 부터 2017년까지 유네스코 사무총장을 지낸 유네스코 최초의 여성 사무총장이다.

 

모스크바 국립대학원에서 국제관계학 석사학위를 받았고, 미국 메릴랜드대 공공대학원의 외교정책결정 프로그램, 하버드대 케네디스쿨 리더십·경제개발 프로그램을 이수했다.

 

유네스코 사무총장 재직 시절, 유엔의 2030지속가능발전목표(SDG) 채택을 위한 활동에 적극적으로 기여하였고 특히 지속가능발전목표 4번 “포용적이고 공평한 양질의 교육과 평생학습 기회 증진”을 위해 힘썼으며 발전 목표를 달성하는 데 있어 과학의 역할에 주목하고 성평등, 세계 문화 유산 보호를 촉구하였다.

 

특히 말리, 시리아, 이라크 등 분쟁 지역 내 문화 유산 보호에 적극적으로 앞장섰고 전쟁을 이유로 문화 유산을 파괴하는 극단주의자들을 목소리 높여 비판했으며 그 결과 유엔 안전보장이사회가 문화 유산 보호와 연계하여 평화 및 안보 유지를 위한 몇 가지 기념비적인 결의안을 채택하기도 하였다.

 

이리나 보코바는 포브스 선정 2016년 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 여성 명단에 포함되었다.

 

2020년에는 미국 예술과학아카데미의 국제 명예 회원으로 2021년에는 세계 예술 과학 아카데미 위원으로 임명되었다.

 

40여개 국가로부터 뛰어난 업적을 인정받았고, 대한민국의 경희대학교, 영국 킹스 칼리지 및 에딘버러 대학, 프랑스 파리 사클레 대학교, 미국 보스턴 대학교, 이탈리아 밀라노 대학교 등 전 세계 유수의 대학으로부터 명예 박사 학위를 받았다.

 

현재 반기문 세계 시민 센터의 이사회 이사이자, 코스타리카에 위치한 유엔 평화 대학교 이사회 의장, 미국 뉴욕 콩코디아 대학교의 리더십 위원회 위원, 미국 뉴욕에 위치한 유엔 지속가능발전해법네트워크(SDSN) 리더십 위원회 위원, 국제과학위원회 후원자, 프랑스 파리 정치대학 국제대학원의 전략 위원회 위원을 포함해 다양한 직책을 역임하고 있다.

 

모국어인 불가리아어 외에 러시아어, 영어, 프랑스어, 스페인어에 능통하다. 

 

Irina Bokova, born in Sofia (Bulgaria), has been two terms the Director-General of UNESCO from 2009 to 2917. She is the first woman to lead the Organisation. 

 

Having graduated from Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Irina Bokova was a Fellow at the University of Maryland, Washington, and followed an executive program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. 

 

As Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova was actively engaged in the UN efforts to adopt Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, particularly Goal 4 on “Inclusive and equitable quality education and life-long learning for all», promoting the critical role of science for development, gender equality, the protection of the world’s cultural heritage. 

 

She was particularly active in the defence of cultural heritage in conflict in Mali, Syria and Iraq and in denouncing extremists’ destruction of heritage as a tool of war, which lead to the adoption by the UN Security Council of several land mark resolutions on the link between maintaining peace, security and the protection of cultural heritage

 

Irina Bokova was on the Forbes List of the worlds most influential women for 2016.

 

In 2020 she was elected International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2021 – Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science.

 

She has received state distinctions from more than 40 countries and is Doctor honoris causa of leading universities across the world such as Kyung-Hee University, Korea, King’s College and University of Edinburgh, UK, Paris-Sud Saclay, France, Boston University, US, Catholic University of Milan, Italy, and others.

 

Currently, she is a Member of the Board of “Ban Ki Moon Centre for Global Citizens”, Chair of the Board of Governors of the UN University of Peace, Costa Rica, Member of the Concordia Leadership Council, New York, Member of the Leadership Council of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), New York, Patron of the International Science Council (ICS), Member of the Strategic Committee of the Paris School of International Affairs /PSIA/ at SciencesPo, among other activities.

 

In addition to her mother tongue, she speaks English, French, Spanish and Russian.
